Juniper is Linda Fredriksson's first release with We Jazz. She engages the listeners in an art cinema approach to tell her story. Her camera begins with "Neon Light [and the sky was trans]" with simple clean baritone saxophone lines, and with her alto sax screeching apocalyptically towards the middle. Camera swiftly switches to a scene of unrest in the second track "Juniper". What follows the short track is a drama (third track "Nana - Tepalle") that continues to leave the listeners unresolved. A climax is reached before the album takes a breather in "Pinetree Song".
Juniper is as non-jazz as it gets. The album lacks the typical tensions and modal changes one would expect to hear from a jazz record. But it is Fredriksson's cinematic windworks, accomplanied by the electro-acoustic / ambient arrangement, that allows a singer songwriter take on jazz music.
The album ends with "Clea", a track that reminds one of the finish from a Hollywood movie, no less than any resolve you would find in a jazz progression.
