Born to Martinquan / Belgium parents, Nala Sinephro was nurtured by the jazz / classical influence by her folks. Her two attempts to complete jazz education didn't materialize however. It was the South London jazz scene that unbiasedly released her unique potential. Space 1.8, her debut album, is exactly what a vibrant open-minded community could spawn.

Unlike many of the modern jazz babies who entered the musical world with instituted jazz education, it is believed that it was the trauma (a jaw tumor during her teens) and racial disparity that shaped her sound. And it is a "sound" that she has a knack for, or a "soundscape". On one of the tracks, Space 5, starts with a looping pulse mimicking the sound of a heart rate monitor. A muffled beat layered with jazz snare on Space 6 ridcule each other, backdropping a crossroad of questions and traditions.

Other than the harp, to her disposal is the use of modular synthesizer. The expandability and tension one often expects from the genre of jazz are expressed via the oscillation, filtering and amplification of her synth, which she often employs to lay down extended bliss in live performance.

It is safe to say that Space 1.8 wouldn't be an instant classic without the contributions from her South London comrades. Ahnansé, James Mollison and Nubya Garcia all contributed saxophones to the album, rounding out the album with added accessibility.
