Starting Point is an unreleased album made in 1975, roughly ten years into the military dictatorship under General Ernesto Geisel. Brothers Nazario teamed up with Assumpcao to create an album so ahead of their time.
The piano/bass/dum trio had the signature Brazilian polyrhythmic footprints cooking with basslines so reminiscent of the golden 70s disco era, but instead of a sense of mirrorball optimism, a unwavering determination vibe prevails. The avant garde piano playing weaves through the entirety of the album, witnessing the early days of democratic participation of the jazz music we know today.
Some say that the maximum amount of creativity is often found when oppression is at its height. This album exemplifies this observation to its fullest.
