Jazz records have always been the feedback loops of influences unknown to musicians. This genre is a debate enabler, of culture, perspective and spirituality. On any jazz record, what the listeners receive are interpretation of frequencies, more than just the frequencies alone.
The 2017 "Where We Come From" is a live document of creative improvisation and post production from two major contemporary progressive jazz camps, namely the Chicago's International Anthem Recording and the soul and dance influenced South London jazz scene. It was the first time McCraven met his peers in London. They gathered at London's Total Refreshment Center to flush out their influences, tossing and cooking with hip hop beats, jazz funk keys and moody saxophone chops (there was no bass playing on the record).
Musicians from this record were all budding jazz artists at that time. UK's Nubya Garcia just released her debut album Nubya's 5ive in 2017, while Makaya McCraven was touring heavily with Kamasi Washington after releasing his conceptual album "In the Moment" in 2015. Although "Where We Come From" might not be the most polished works from them, they indicate possibilities of what the modern jazz language could evolve into the pandemic years.
